I can’t count how many times I’ve heard the question “Do carbs make me fat?” The answer is a simple no. Carbs cannot alone make you fat, but for some reason everyone has given them such a bad wrap.
There are two types of carbs, complex and simple. Now I am not a dietician and I am by no means a genius but I have read enough to understand the importance of knowing which carbs you are consuming.
Complex carbs are slow digesting and do not spike insulin while simple are fast digesting and do spike insulin This is the most important fact to take away from this article.. I aim to stay away from simple sugars as much as possible. This would include sugars, white bread, baked goods, and probably anything processed. Complex carbs come from whole grains, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal as a few examples.
When you spike your insulin it initiates a rapid glucose uptake and is either used for energy or as fat. The fall of blood glucose is then what is known as the “sugar crash.” Simple carbs in excessive amounts is not healthy and would not present you with the body that you desire. Complex carbs in excessive amounts is also not good but with the right amount it will present you a much more aesthetic body and clean energy.
Overall, carbohydrates by themselves will not make you fat. The best thing you can do is spend time learning which carbs effect you differently and using that knowledge to your advantage.
Until next time,
